I loved this! You had me going there for a minute when I saw the title, and then I laughed out loud at your photo! It’s so cool that Noah is such a talented musician, even if it means you have a lot of stuff in your closets!
Oliver, who is 9, has been consistently asking for violin lessons for months, so he started last week. While there, Noah started chatting with the owner of the shop, who turned out to be the mom of one of his high school classmates. She connected him with a trombonist—who is also an Army reservist and plays in a military band!—who will give Noah lessons while Oliver is taking his! Between them and Ethan, who plays flute, I see a lot of concerts in my future.
Great clickbait, even better article. I played French horn through junior high, high school and most of college - miss it sometimes but it's just too hard to keep up without tons of practice.
Both! I was always seduced by its beautiful appearance and tone, and also got off on the fact that no one else played it (least of all boys) so that made me "special." Then in high school I ended up sitting next to this guy who was literally the best high school French horn player in the entire state of Connecticut, so that was inspiring too. But I was never any kind of star; just solid enough to play in a couple college organizations like Concert Band, various youth orchestras, stuff like that.
Piano is important though - it's probably the best thing someone could dabble in (maybe guitar has more social cred). I regret not continuing or getting to the level where I could easily reintegrate it into my life now. But French horn is kind of like a thoroughbred racecourse: very high-maintenance.
Noah never let the inconvenience and irrelevance of his instruments stop him! But yes I recently inherited my grandma’s piano. My dad learned to play on it and so did I. It’s lovely to have. And honestly I’m a sound-sensitive person, but hearing live instruments at home never bothers me in the slightest.
I'm actually just learning to read music. No particular reason, but I felt like it's something I should know. Makes very little sense right now but it's fun to learn something new.
Brilliant title!
So happy to learn that you have mastered the craft of writing click bait headlines 😂
Coming late to this fine piece. As a musician, I approve!

Not to speak ill of my parents skills, but I was always a bit jelly of my friends who grew up in a musical household/parent who played something.
I'll never not be able to call them "'bones" now. I guess this means when he plays, he's "'boning out" or "'bonin"
I don’t know how many times I’ve walked in to find him greasing his bone.
Men are disgusting, we only want one thing: to 'bone in peace.

When he got this email Noah said he thought “good lord what has she written” 😂
Seems like French horn is one of the most challenging of the popular brass instruments for sure. Did you play in band in college or just for fun?

I can read the treble clef pretty well. Base clef is iffy, esp when using both on piano.
I literally don't know anything about music. The idea that it can be represented via symbols makes no sense to me. I'm excited to learn
Wait, being a youth minister didn't require or at least allow him to play an instrument (particularly guitar or piano)?
Kind sir, we were of a particular brand of Christianity that did not use musical instruments in worship. Only our voices!
How interesting! :)
